The Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists (AWAB) recently hosted its 4th Annual Lecture, featuring Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis, who delivered an inspiring message titled “Reveal, Resist, and Revel: Queer and Trans Artists’ Visions of Spirituality.”
Held at Seattle First Baptist Church, the evening invited participants to explore how art and faith intertwine to reveal the sacred nature of queerness, resist dehumanization, and celebrate joy as an act of spiritual resistance. Dr. Sabia-Tanis’ lecture reminded us that queer and trans artists have long been prophets of truth—revealing beauty, power, and holiness in our collective story.
Following the lecture, AWAB Communications Coordinator James Rice III sat down with Dr. Sabia-Tanis for a short one-on-one conversation. In this interview, Dr. Sabia-Tanis reflects on why he accepted AWAB’s invitation, offers an overview of his lecture, and shares a heartfelt word of hope for those seeking courage and faith in challenging times.

AWAB extends deep gratitude to Seattle First Baptist Church for hosting this year’s lecture and to everyone who continues to support the work of radical welcome, faith-based justice, and full inclusion within the Baptist family. Together, we reveal, resist, and revel—trusting that God’s love continues to unfold through every act of courage and creativity.
